Maurice Hawthorne

Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Maurice Hawthorne has lived and worked in the North-East of England since 1988.

Mr Hawthorne studied at the Manchester University Medical School. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in July 1982 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in January 1983. His specialist accreditation was conferred in February 1987. Over the years since he has been an examiner himself for The Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Intercollegiate Examining Board in Otolaryngology.

In August 2005, Mr Hawthorne was appointed Deanery Advisor for surgery to the Northern Deanery. As part of his commitment to the highest standards of surgical training in the UK he advised The Deanery on surgical training and assisted in the foundation of the Northern Academy of Postgraduate Surgery.

Mr Hawthorne is also a previous Council member of the Hearing Aid Council, regulators for the private hearing aid industry in the United Kingdom, and a former examiner for the Assiut and Sohag Universities in Egypt.

Mr Hawthorne has acted as a Hospital Visitor on behalf of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, as part of the College’s Quality Assurance Programme relating to the training of surgeons in the UK. He is a committee member of the Joint Surgical Colleges Recertification Project. He currently serves as a Council Member and Trustee of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and sits on the Patient Safety and Quality and Outcomes Committees. He is responsible for the implementation of revalidation for surgeons in the North East of England.

In addition to his professional commitments, private and NHS practices, Mr Hawthorne also regularly undertakes work as a medico-legal expert, preparing reports both for the courts and also for independent sources (such as on behalf of the patient regarding an insurance claim) and is a recognized consultant with all the leading private health insurance providers.

Mr Hawthorne has published over 45 research papers in various aspects of Otolaryngology, as well as a number of books, including “Questions and Answers in Otolaryngology” – Maurice R Hawthorne and Brian Bingham (John Wright London 1988); “A Synopsis of Otolaryngology – 5th Edition” – Roger Gray and Maurice Hawthorne (Butterworth Heinemann London 1992) and “A Synopsis of Operative ENT Surgery” – Maurice Hawthorne and Brian Bingham (Butterworth Heinemann London 1992). Mr Hawthorne has also had over 15 chapters published in leading textbooks.
